Student wins Nebraska ADDY award

Junior graphic design major Kristen Vogler won a silver Student ADDY at the 2011 Nebraska ADDY Awards.

Kristen Vogler, junior graphic design major, won a silver Student ADDY in the Nebraska ADDY competition for 2011. The award was presented during a banquet on Feb. 5, 2012 at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln.

Union to host 59th Annual Music Festival

Students from academies and high schools across the Mid-America territory will descend on the Union College campus this week for the 59th Annual Music Festival, held February 1-4.

Each Seventh-day Adventist academy from a nine-state area surrounding Nebraska will send their top vocalists to join a mass choir performing on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4:00 p.m. in sanctuary of the College View Seventh-day Adventist Church. Individual school groups will also sing for a Friday night service at 7:30 in the College View Church.

At a time when Christian preaching and music often focus on celebration and spiritual highs, Dr. Luke Powery believes that some of the most important lessons about God and the human condition can be learned from a genre of music filled with pain—the spiritual.

Student Teacher Represents Union at Pearl Harbor Memorial

Student teaching isn’t always confined to the classroom. For Steven Hutchison, fall 2011 music education and Spanish graduate, his practicum took him over 3000 miles away.

Every education major at Union College spends a semester as a full-time student teacher, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real classroom situations and transition into the role of a teacher.

Union celebrates Christmas with weekend concerts

Union College will celebrate Christmas with three annual concerts this weekend.

The Christmas Choral Concert, on Friday, Dec. 9, will feature the Unionaires and the Vocal Octet. The groups will perform seasonal music by John Rutter, several Robert Shaw and Alice Parker arrangements, and an eclectic mix of the director's personal Christmas favorites that have stood the test of time.

“This music is special to me as it is music that I grew up with,” said Dan Lynn, professor of music. “Coming from a music educator's household, this is a homage to my roots and to major influences in my life.”

Freedom is simply a painting away for girls trafficked across the Nepal/India border each year as sex slaves.
