Biology professor retires to be a missionary

Don Abbey, a biology professor at Union since 1998, and his wife, Janella, will be leaving Union after this academic year to become the Asian Projects field directors for Adventist Frontier Missions.

Retirement dreams of sitting on a beach watching sailboats and playing with grandchildren were pushed aside when Don and Janella Abbey felt the call to serve God in a new and different way.

Union College will break ground for a new 55,000 sq. ft. science and mathematics complex on Friday, April 6, at 1:30 p.m.

Union College will strengthen its commitment to provide excellent science, mathematics and health science education in the Lincoln community by breaking ground for a new 55,000 sq. ft. science and mathematics complex on April 6.

Getting Acquainted with Dr. Kenneth Osborn

Dr. Kenneth Osborn grew up on a farm near St. Joseph, Missouri. He attended and graduated from Missouri Western State University. Then he went on to get his Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from the University of Kansas. Osborn has been married to his wonderful wife, Kim, for nearly eight years now.

Osborn's love of service isn't limited to his teaching career. He also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity. “I just finished serving for two years as the president of my local Habitat affiliate and have been active with Habitat for over a decade,” Osborn said.

Kenny Mapp discovered a love of chemistry while at Union College and is on his way to pharmacy school this fall.

Before I entered college, I felt terrified. I knew college would be difficult and wondered if I had what it would take to succeed. Now that I’m a senior, I see that even though the coursework can be very demanding, with the help of great professors here at Union, anyone can succeed.

Dr. Amy Utt was born in California, but spent much of her young life in other states, including four years of her early life living in Lincoln, Nebaska. Dr. Utt graduated from Pacific Union College in 2001. Between college and graduate school, Dr. Utt interned at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, Oregon, with the Birds of Prey Program. Her experience working with birds fueled her desire to go back to school. She moved back to California and obtained her Ph.D. at Loma Linda University. While at Loma Linda, she studied animal behavior and conservation, researching the California condor.

Dr. Frankie Rose Comes to Teach at Union

Dr. Frankie Rose was born and raised in Missouri. He graduated from Sunnydale Academy and lived in Missouri until he came to Union College to study Biology. He completed his B.S. degree in 2002. Rose then went on to the University of Missouri where, in 2009, he completed his Ph.D. in Microbiology. Rose’s main focus was Human Molecular Genetics. He spent 2010 doing Postdoctoral Research at the University of Missouri .
