ASB officers for 2012-2013 chosen

The executive officers for Union College's Associated Student Body have been elected for the 2012-2013 academic year. Elections are held the spring before the new student government takes office to allow time for the officers to plan and organizefor the next year while being mentored by the current student leaders.

Students raise money to battle breast cancer

The reality of those combating cancer—past, present and future—sparks an emotionally reaction in most. For some it also sparks a passion for action.

The impact became all too real for Amanda Shea when a friend’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Drawing on the pain, the junior psychology major found herself connected with others who had faced similar experiences and were doing something about it. “I just wanted to be a part of something to better the world,” she said. “When one of my friend’s mom became diagnosed with breast cancer I became even more driven to join the cause.”

Mr. and Ms. World Pageant to feature talent and food from around the world

Union College's Mr. and Ms. World Pageant will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, in the Union College gymnasium. The annual event offers sights and flavors from around the world as Union students representing their native countries compete for the Mr. or Ms. World crown.

The event will feature delicacies from many Lincoln restaurants including Blue Orchid, Tia Garden, High Society Cheesecake, House of Hunan, Noodles and Valentino’s. Admission is free for ASB members, $3 for nonmember students and $5 for everyone else. Event organizers also ask that each person bring $1 to donate to the "No More Thumbprints" mission project.

Concert to raise funds, awareness for Salvadorian literacy

Among a sea of young faces, eighty-year-old Maria’s expectant smile stood out. Although the El Salvador Literacy Program mainly serves youth, it is not uncommon to find parents and grandparents among the students.

Congratulations 2010/2011 class officers

Following a rousing rendition of "Slinga de Ink" at convocation on Sept. 21, 2010, classes met to choose new student leaders for this school year. A far cry from the earnest politicking of ASB elections in the spring, class elections are informal affairs. Nominations are made on the spot, and votes are cast by raised hands. As happy as the winners are to be chosen, the unsuccessful candidates often return to their seats with a smile, knowing they have one less thing to worry about.

Summer is a quiet time at Union College, and each fall students rejuvenate the campus. For the last three months, syllabi have been written, dorm rooms refurbished, classrooms constructed, and in a thousand ways faculty, staff, and administrators have prepared for students to return. Packing for college can be full of headaches and guesswork, particularly for students who have never lived in a residence hall environment before. Thankfully, one of the advantages to Union's location in Lincoln is the convenience and variety of shopping options.

Annual Mr. and Ms. World Pageant to be webcast

Union College’s annual Mr. and Ms. World Pageant will be webcast live from the Union College gym on February 27, starting at 8:15 p.m. CST. The live feed and archived footage from the event will be available at http://www.ucollege.edu/uclive.

Co-sponsored by Associated Student Body (ASB) and the International Club, the pageant features 10 contestants—each from a different country—judged in three categories: national costume, formal wear and talent.
