LPN to BSN Second Step Program
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Union College (UC) is approved by the Nebraska State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Licensed practical nurses (LPN) enter the nursing program as second step students to complete a BSN.
Applicants with any disciplinary action are not eligible for Nursing Program admission.

Prerequisites
Prerequisites or their equivalents must be completed at Union College or another institution before acceptance into the nursing program (NP). Prerequisites taken more than 10 years prior to entry into the nursing program will be individually evaluated.
Union College Nursing Program Admission Criteria
- Admission to Union College
- Completion of the Nursing Program online application
- Completion of Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)* (Arrange for this test prior to application deadline by calling the Nursing Program Office: 402.486.2524.
- Completion of Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI)* assessments for placement
- Official transcript from previous school of nursing and/or each college or university attended
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale.
- License to practice nursing in the United States (U.S.)
- Space available in nursing course/clinical
- Confirmation fee of $150.00 due upon receipt of official admission letter to confirm your intention to begin the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
- Recommendation letter from your LPN Program Director of Nursing (in addition to the 3 references found on the Nursing Program Application).
Placement
In addition to meeting the admissions/general policies the following will apply:
A. Licensed practical nurse applicants are evaluated individually for placement in the Nursing Program utilizing Assessment Technology Institute (ATI)* assessments. An additional fee is required.
B. Each candidate will begin with completion of the Fundamentals ATI assessment. If the candidate passes the Fundamentals ATI at a level 2, the candidate will be given the Medical-Surgical ATI assessment.
C. Regardless of prior education or experience NRSG 335: Physical Assessment, and NRSG 359: Pathophysiology, must be completed at Union College
D. Graduation Requirements: (Union College Bulletin is the official guide)
i. Complete 30 of the last 36 credit hours at Union College,
ii. Complete a total of 128 credit hours
iii. Complete 57 nursing credit hours.
iv. 56 credit hours must be completed at a 4-year college or university.
v. The nursing program must be completed in six years.
CPR Certification*
Proof of CPR certification: American Heart Association for the Healthcare Provider is required, no exceptions.
Curriculum Exceptions
To allow more flexibility in the program, LPNs in the second step program are required:
· to take only 6 credit hours of religion (RELT 141 or RELT 110 or RELT 205 and RELT 305) instead of the 12 credit hours of religion listed under the General Education Requirements in the college bulletin.
· to take only 2 credit hours (HHPA 155) of physical education activities instead of 4 credit hours listed under the General Education Requirements in the college bulletin.
· to make up the 8 credit hour difference by taking elective courses to complete the 128 credit hours required for graduation. (See general requirements in the Union College Bulletin.)
Transfer courses will be evaluated for content equivalency by Union College nursing course faculty and clinical skills may require validation. LPNs who are admitted to the second step program must transfer their previous nursing education courses to Union College. The transfer courses will then be considered equivalent to the UC courses and will apply to both the upper division minimum, the nursing hours required, the amount of credits required from a four year institution, and credits required to grant a Bachelors degree.
Union College offers discounted tuition assistance for LPN second step students who meet the following criteria:
1. Licensed as an LPN in Nebraska.
2. Admitted to Union College.
3. Accepted into the Union College Nursing Program and enrolled in nursing courses each semester (tuition assistance does not apply to prerequisite courses).
4. Maintain satisfactory progress according to the Nursing Program’s progression policy (as detailed in the Nursing Program Student Handbook).
