International Writing Centers Week (IWCW)

Each year around Valentine's Day, the worldwide community of writing center folk celebrate IWCW. At Union, we began observing the week in Februrary 2007. Thanks to local vendors such as the Campus Bookstore, The Ice Cream Shoppe on 70th St. and Old Cheney Rd., and Lee Booksellers on 56th and Hwy. 2, the Studio's consultants put on an IWCW bash that included daily quiz questions for the whole campus and a game night punctuated with Valentine's decorations and treats.

Because part of Union's mission is to prepare students for service and work in a global society, the Studio's consultants have the opportunity to develop and professionalize their work by being members of the regional organization of the worldwide writing center community. In addition to their regional affliation, consutlants are also members of the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA). Attending and presenting at conferences contribute to consultants' on-going training, allowing them to better serve their peers in the Studio as well as hone their own communication skills.

As members of MWCA, consultants began attending the organization's annual conference in the fall of 2006. After this meeting, consultants Jeana Styron, Mary Christian, and Derek Timms submitted summaries of their experience, which were published in the MWCA Newsletter.

In October 2007, consultants attended the regional conference in Kansas City and led an interactive workshop on planning a successful celebration for International Writing Center Week.
