Swimming Lessons

Swimming is fun and healthy, a way to meet new friends, and challenging for almost all ages. The Larson Lifestyle Center offers swimming lessons for swimming levels from preschoolers who are just beginning to be comfortable in water up to Level 6 - C.

Level Descriptions

Preschool Swimming Lessons

(Ages 3-5 years)

Preschool 1 (still some fear of water)

- Put their face into the water
- Complete five complete bobs
- Back & front float for 5 seconds
- Back fin
- Kick feet with their face in the water 4-5m
- Jump to the instructor
- Turn over from front to back
- Sitting dive in the shallow water

Preschool 2 (not afraid of water, bobs)

- Complete 10 complete bobs
- Back & front float for 10 seconds
- Prone & back glide with kick
- Kneeling dive
- Turn over from front to back
- Back finning with kick, 10-15m
- Rhythmic breathing with board, 15m
- Arm pulls with rhythmic breathing, 5m
- Survival float for 30 seconds

Swimming Lessons

(Ages 6 and older)

Level 1: Water Exploration

Prerequisites: Ages 6 & up, any fear of water OR completion of PS 2 if under 6
- Become oriented with aquatic environment & move comfortably through the water
- Fully submerge face
- Experience buoyancy & demonstrate basic breath control
- Enter & exit water independently
- Become familiar with alternating arm action
- Learn basic water safety rules & become familiar with ways to get help
- Demonstrate teaching assists without equipment
- Recognize a swimmer in distress
- Become familiar with using a life jacket

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Prerequisites;  No fear of water, able to float
- Fully submerge head & retrieve underwater objects
- Explore deep water with support
- Demonstrate unsupported front & back float or glide
- Demonstrate arm stroke on front & back
- Change direction & position on front & back
- Demonstrate rhythmic breathing
- Demonstrate step-in entry & side exit
- Perform flutter kick on front & back
- Demonstrate finning on back
- Perform reaching & extension assist from deck
- Become familiar with rescue breathing

Level 3: Stroke Development & Sitting Position

Prerequisites:  Swim pool length, flutter kick, retrieve objects from the bottom of pool 
- Retrieve object unsupported with eyes open
- Coordinate the components of the front and back crawl, butterfly, elementary back and side stroke
- Jump in deep water from side of pool with life jacket on
- Check, call & care
- Dive from side of pool in kneeling positions
- Demonstrate gliding with push-off
- Coordinate the components of the front & back crawl
- Demonstrate elementary backstroke & treading water
- Become familiar with H.E.L.P. & huddle positions

Level 4: Stroke Improvement

- Dive from side of the pool using compact or stride position
- Demonstrate feet first surface dive
- Learn alternate kicks for treading water
- Learn rescue breathing techniques
- Demonstrate treading water using scissors kick, breaststroke kick or rotary kick
- Learn basics of breaststroke, sidestroke, back crawl, butterfly, and elementary backstroke

Level 5: Stroke Refinement

- Demonstrate the components of the butterfly, breaststroke, sidestroke, front & back crawl stroke, & elementary backstroke
- Perform pike & tuck dives
- Perform shallow dive
- Perform flip turns on front & back
- Learn about survival swimming
- Learn the elements of rescue breathing

Level 6A: Lifeguard Readiness

- Demonstrate skills of 6 basic strokes taught in previous classes
- Demonstrate ability to do open turns and flip turns
- Perform feet first, pike & tuck surface dives
- Call for emergency help
- Care for conscious, choking victim
- Assists - throwing, reaching, wading, & walking
- Compact jump with the rescue tube
- Swim with rescue tube using front crawl and breaststroke
- Demonstrate a beach drag with victim
- Spinal injury management-head splint technique

Level 6B: Personal Water Safety

- Demonstrate swimming skills: front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and butterfly
- Perform open turns and flip turns
- Demonstrate swimming and self rescue skills while clothed

Level 6C: Fitness Swimmer

- Demonstrate open turns and flip turns
- Demonstrate swimming skills of front & back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and butterfly
- Demonstrate etiquette in fitness swimming
- Understand the proper use of the pace clock
- Demonstrate the usefulness of a pull buoy when swimming
- Learn how to set up a fitness program
- Know how to apply the principles of water exercise
- Demonstrate the use of hand paddles for certain strokes
- Learn how to calculate target heart rate while clothed
- Learn various training techniques in swimming

Registration

Registration can be completed in person or by calling the Larson Lifestyle Center at 402.486.2525.  Payment is required by 10:00 pm on the day you register.  Payment can be made with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard or Discover Card.

The Larson Lifestyle Center office hours are as follows:

Sunday   7:00 am - 9:00 am and 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Monday through Thursday  5:45 am - 10:00 pm

Friday   5:45 am - 5:30 pm

 Refund Policy: A partial refund will be issued if the vacancy in the class is filled within the first 2 days of the session. A full refund will be given if notice is received 24 hours prior to the beginning of the session. A credit slip may be obtained for any child missing 4 or more classes due to illness.
