Job Description:


Teaches courses such as Educational Diversity (Multicultural Education), Philosophy of Christian Education, Learning Theories and Measurement (Educational Psychology), General Secondary Methods, and Issues in Education.

Advices secondary education majors

Supervises secondary student teachers

Serves as liaison between the education unit and the Lincoln Public Schools for placing elementary and secondary education candidates for observations, practicum, and student teaching.

Professional Background:

Forty six years of teaching experience as follows:

Twenty two years (1992 to 2014) at Union College in the Division of Human Development.

Eleven years (July 1981 to June 1992) as principal and teacher at three junior academies in the Michigan Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists.

Two years (July 1979 to June 1981) taught undergraduate and graduate courses as Instructor in the Teacher Education Program at Michigan State University.

Eleven years (January 1964 to December 1974) of elementary and secondary school teaching in the Seventh-day Adventist Scool in Singapore. During this period for two years was sponsored to attend Spicer Memorial College in Poona, India to complete the undergraduate program in English and Religion.

Two years (January 1962 to December 1963) of secondary school teaching at Ayer Manis School in Serian, Sarawak, Malaysia.  



Personal Information:


Y. J. is married with two children, a son and a daughter. Both children completed medical school at Loma Linda University in 1998.

Y. J. is a grandfather of two lovely grandchildren in Michigan. They attend Kalamazoo SDA School. This year (2014) granddaughter Solana is in seventh grade and grandson Suvan is in sixth grade. They love school. They are also active in their local church Pathfinder Club program.



Both of Y. J.'s children received their elementary, secondary, college and graduate education in SDA schools. In 1998 they graduated from Loma Linda University Medical School

Son Kenneth lives in Redlands, California and serves as an ER physicians in three hospitals. He is the primary author of the book Atlas of Gross Anatomy. A second edition of this Atlas was released in 2013. Also it is translated into several European languages. It is used in many major public medical colleges and universities in the USA and abroad. The first edition was used at Union College in the Physician Assistant Program.   

Daughter Juanita and her husband Douglas Campbell live in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Juanita is a Pediatrician/Dermatologist in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Douglas is an engineer in the Stryker  Company that makes medical equipment. Both of them love their jobs. They take an active role in the Paw Paw Seventh-day Adventist Church. With their two children, they traveled to Honduras and Dominican Republic on mission trips. Every year for a couple of weeks Juanita serves as the summer camp physician at Camp AuSable, Michigan. This year they are taking their two children to the International Pathfinder Camporee in Wisconsin.



Y. J.'s wife Gnani completed B.A. in Office Administration at Spicer Memorial College, India; M.A. and Ph.D. in Business Education at Michigan State University. She taught in public schools in Michigan before moving to Union College in 1992. She taught one year at Union in the Business Department.

She suffered a massive stroke in 2003 that left her paralyzed on the right side. She was in a nursing home in Lincoln for nearly three years. In 2007, she was transferred to Kalamzaoo, Michigan, because her grandchildren wanted to spend more time with their grandmother. Gnani passed away on October 31, 2013.
