Union College awards degrees to 198 students

LINCOLN—On Sunday, May 15, Union College awarded associate and baccalaureate degrees to 198 students during the annual commencement ceremony in the College View Seventh-day Adventist Church. The service recognized 31 graduates from December 2004, 121 May graduates and 46 prospective August graduates. Among this group, 13 students graduated as Union Scholars and nine students received two degrees.
        Honorary degrees were awarded to two longtime Union College employees in the Plant Services department. Roger Dwayne Binder, Union employee since 1963, received a Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Control Systems. Archie W. Hilliard, Union employee since 1958, received a Bachelor of Technology in Electromechanical Systems.
        John and Lilya Wagner received the 2005 President’s Award for their ongoing philanthropic commitment to Union College. John served as Union College president from 1986-1991, and Lilya served as vice president for Institutional Advancement at Union. They both have continued in careers of philanthropy and leadership around the country. Lilya was also the commencement speaker.
        In the following graduate lists, honor students are indicated by abbreviations following their name. Union College awards degrees with honors on the grade-point average scale as listed below:


Baccalaureate Degrees
        Summa Cum Laude (SCL) 3.9-4.0
        Magna Cum Laude (MCL) 3.75-3.89
        Cum Laude (CL) 3.5-3.74
Associate Degrees
        Commendation (CD) 3.5-4.0
Union Scholars
        Honors program includes advanced coursework and a research project.
