Triathlon awakens the spirit

LINCOLN—What kind of spirit brings Union College students and staff to an
empty parking lot at 8:30 a.m. on a Sunday to swim 0.4 km in cold lake
water, bike 10 km and run 5 km?
“There’s this energy, this aura,” said Walter Anderson as people
stretched, mingled and prepared for the Collegiate Adventist for Better
Living (CABL) Triathlon on Sept. 11, 2005, at the Branched Oak Recreation
Area in Raymond. Anderson went on to complete the race two minutes before
any other of the 31 individuals or 13 teams crossed the finish line.
This student-led annual event is growing. Last year there were 25
individuals and 12 teams. Jamie Herra, the CABL director, said, “The
purpose was to encourage people to get out and exercise, but also to have
fun and get to know each other a little better.”
The event sponsors were Chipotle’s, Ivanna Cone and Stacy’s Locker Room.
