“Do not be overcome by evil,” Romans 12:21
This is how the chapter ends! But that’s only the first part of the sentence. Standing alone that seems like and arduous task; I’m pretty sure an impossible task, IF that’s what I focus on. I can’t overcome evil by trying not to overcome evil. If I try, all I’m doing is thinking about evil and a day or so ago I suggested that I should “HATE WHAT IS EVIL.” So that would mean I have to think about what I am to hate, and Proverbs says that, “as a man thinks in his heart so is he!” The result appears to be that I would end up being evil!! I don’t like the sounds of that (though I must admit, I’ve spent my fair share of days trying to do just that in my low moments on the journey with God.)
Now, here’s the whole sentence. “Do not be overcome by evil, BUT OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD.” I don’t “beat evil,” I “BE GOOD!” If I focus on the evil I become evil; if I focus on the good… you can finish that sentence, it will be good reinforcement! J Paul said to the believers in Philippi, “Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Think about the good--- do the good--- and defeat, by default, the evil. That’s God’s positive approach to living a life like I am a child of the King!
Have a great day focusing on the good,
Quote for the day: “Do good and be a good person because that’s just what the Lord expects. There just ain’t nothing special about being and doing good. It’s what the Lord expects…”
