It's January 15; Good Morning Union

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35

On my Biblical journey in discipleship, I want to look for what specifically God’s word says about being a “follower of Jesus.” Last night as I was falling asleep and thinking about GMU this text came to mind and it came back again this morning. What an obvious yet logical place to begin. It doesn’t get much more basic than this.

The “by this,” that introduces my verse as a conclusion to something, is pretty obviously referring to the previous verse, “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you MUST love one another.” And “by this” everyone will know that I am His disciple! That’s a pretty bottom line expectation for a disciple but a very profound calling at the same time- to love one another AS JESUS LOVES ME! Not some giddy, emotional, passion equated too much in society as erotic sex! No, “as He loves me” can be the focus of my study for a long time. In fact Ellen White says it WILL be my study throughout all eternity! What I find in Jesus’ love is an accepting, forgiving, sacrificing, sometimes confronting and challenging, other-centeredness that causes me to love in a whole different way than my society. No wonder “everyone will know” that I am His follower- my love will look so different!

So that’s today’s challenge in discipleship- learning about and applying a “Jesus love” to everyone I come in contact with. I wonder what would happen if I JUST focused on that in my interactions today? Would “everyone” see that I am His disciple? I’d like to find out. How about you?

Help me love like You, Jesus.

Have a great day illustrating Jesus’ love,

Pastor Rich
