“The grace of God brings…”         Titus 2:11

I reread the book of Titus again after sending GMU yesterday morning (it’s just a little book!) and I found another ah-ha moment that I just had to share this morning before moving on. The “grace of God” does three things according to Paul in this part of his letter to Titus:

1.       It brings salvation

2.       It teaches me to say no to

“When the kindness and love of God appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy.”    Titus 3:4

What a good reminder this morning as I was reading the book of Titus, another of Paul’s mentees who ended up pastoring the people on the island of Crete. What a powerful message for a preacher to preach; what an even more powerful message of God’s children to live!

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

2 Timothy 4:7-8

“I know Whom I have believed…”            2 Timothy 1:12

Still one of my favorite verses in the Bible. This was Paul’s last letter and he wrote it to his young friend Timothy who had been mentored to take over after Paul’s work was done. I like his confidence, not in himself but in his God, and I like what that has come to mean for me. The whole verse says, “I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him.”

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Devote yourself to public reading of Scriptures, to preaching and teaching, and to your gift.”    1 Timothy 4:12

“Train yourself to be godly.    1 Timothy 4:7,8

Here’s some good advice from Paul to his young friend Timothy who was pastoring in Ephesus. I don’t know, but it almost sounds like Timothy was into physical fitness, because Paul used the metaphor of physical training to teach his friend about priorities. “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
