In 2003 Union College introduced a new logo. The classic serif typeface for the new logo was selected to reflect the college's long-standing history and tradition. The smaller treatment of the world "College" provides a foundation for the more prominent "Union." The contemporary stylized "O" in "Union":

  • reflects Union's innovative, open environment,
  • portrays a warm, caring family "embrace" that is part of the Union experience,
  • shows the overlapping of spirituality and learning that is central to Union's mission, and
  • expresses Union's global mission and the tradition of the Golden Cords.

You may be thinking, "Sure, this is a nifty way to display the words, 'Union College,' but doesn't there need to be an additional graphic image or campus landmark to make it a logo?" No. Although some logos include a prahic icon, many do not (think IBM, Harvard, Google, etc.). Union has chosen to use its wordmark as the logo without an icon. Still confused? You have a few years to adjust. The last college logo lasted approximately 20 years.

Permission is granted by the college and US law to use this logo in any work referencing Union College, including but not limited to periodicals, books, banners and Web sites, as long as the following style guidelines are met. On-campus entities wishing to use the logo in publications should check with Marketing Communications to ensure the guidelines have been followed.

SPACING Minimum space around logo: 3/8 inch


Typefaces: Garamond and Gill Sans

Garamond and Gill Sans are the recommended typefaces for college publications and printed materials.

Garamond (serif—with lines at tips of letters)
Used in the Union College logo, Garamond is the preferred typeface for body text. This classic, versatile typeface is easy to read.

Gill Sans (sans serif—without stroke lines)
This less formal sans serif typeface is recommended for distinguishing headlines, photo captions, etc. from the body text.

In some cases the word "Union" will be used alone, but this and all other exceptions to the official logo variations must be approved by Marketing Communications.
