The challenge of something new propels Jim McClelland on his artistic journey. Whether he’s focused on an abstract or a classic landscape, whatever he is working on at the moment is his favorite.
“Visual Pleasures,” on display in Union College’s McClelland Art Gallery until April 12, features oil and watercolor pieces that are mainly new works he has produced in the last year. While the subject matter remains reflective on his passion for nature in life and art, many of the pieces this year are a larger format.
“Working on a larger scale allows me more freedom in composition, vision and technique,” McClelland said.
The focus in his work is also a return to God. “The first thing we know about God is that He is a creator,” McClelland said. “He created us with an ability to observe and use our hands, and my goal in my paintings is to share my own experience.”
