Union College nursing graduates posted a 97.3 percent first-time pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX, for the last year from October 2009 to October 2010. Union finished well ahead of the Nebraska pass rate (88.32 percent) and the national pass rate (87.56 percent) and had the highest rate of the fourteen schools of nursing in the state.
If you have searched the library catalog recently, you are already aware that it looks different than it used to. On November 23 the old iLink Web interface was replaced with the new e-Library.
Union College’s physician assistant program will receive a $792,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which will be used to award scholarships to new PA students over the next four years.
Each year between 2011 and 2015, the grant will fund five scholarships for new Union PA students. These $22,000 scholarships will cover tuition and other expenses and can be renewed for a second year. This funding will help expand the program by five additional slots to a class of 30 by the 2011-12 school year.
Union College Library in collaboration with the Writing Studio, Teaching Learning Center, Career Center, ESL, and the Campus Store is pleased to announce One Book One Union 2010-2011. This year's selection, The Teacher Who Couldn't Read by John Corcoran, is the story of a man who finished high school and college, became a teacher, and later started his own business, all without being able to read proficiently. He finally learned to read when he was 48 years old.

Two Union College student missionaries serving in Peru are unharmed after river pirates accosted their boat on Friday. Rachel Downey and Stephanie Rivas are volunteering this school year with Touch of Love Ministries based in Pucallpa, Peru. The two were traveling with several other volunteers when the incident took place.
“We thank God that all our student missionaries are safe,” said Rich Carlson, Union’s director of student missions. “We have been in contact with the parents involved and are working with the local authorities to make sure this matter gets resolved.”
A picture may be worth 1000 words, but Union College has found a visit may be worth 10,000 or more. Although all indicators pointed to a third straight year of declining enrollment, Union saw an expanded campus visit program play a significant role in increasing the fall 2010 enrollment head count to 901 with a full-time equivalency of 818—up two percent over the previous year.

The library is excited to announce the avaibility of a new online resource. Tell Me More from Auralog is a language learning program designed to get students started with learning a language, provide a refresher for those who have already received training in a second language, or to complement a language learning course that is in progress.
On Sept. 24, Union College will host the fourth annual Nebraska Writing Center Consortium meeting featuring guest speaker Dr. Rasha Diab, assistant professor of rhetoric and writing at the University of Texas-Austin.
In addition to delivering the keynote address for the conference, Diab will also give a talk titled “Embracing the Rhetoric of Peace: Insights from Indigenous Practice/Practices” for an Academic Assembly on Thursday, Sept. 23, in Woods Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. Worship credit will be given for attendance.
Following a rousing rendition of "Slinga de Ink" at convocation on Sept. 21, 2010, classes met to choose new student leaders for this school year. A far cry from the earnest politicking of ASB elections in the spring, class elections are informal affairs. Nominations are made on the spot, and votes are cast by raised hands. As happy as the winners are to be chosen, the unsuccessful candidates often return to their seats with a smile, knowing they have one less thing to worry about.

Like many Union College students, Shelina Berglund, a senior from Idaho, will stop at nothing—even dumpster diving—if that’s what it takes to lend a hand. On Thursday, Sept. 9, Berglund will lead Project Impact, a day when more than 800 Union students and employees take a day out of classes and work to serve more than 50 sites throughout the Lincoln community service organizations.
The annual Union College Library fair will be held September 16, 2010 from 3-6 p.m. This year the fair features a sports theme with a variety of activities for everyone. Participants will be able to explore sports-related books from the library collection, try their hands at bowling or golfing, and join a Wii competition.
An internship is part of the curriculum for business
Whether timing the perfect candid, constructing a scene or digitally manipulating elements after the fact, there are a myriad ways photographers interact with their tools and their world to create art. The Young Alumni Art Exhibit on display in the McClelland Art Gallery showcases a wide range of styles, encouraging visitors to consider what makes a photo a work of art.
U.S. News has once again rated Union College in the top tier for its category in the magazine's highly-anticipated annual rankings. Placing 35th among Midwestern regional colleges, this is the fifth consecutive year Union has earned the title of one of America's best colleges.
While no standardized system can account for unique institutional strengths or the individual needs of students, Union College administrators are proud to see the institution compare favorably with its peers.
Summer is a quiet time at Union College, and each fall students rejuvenate the campus. For the last three months, syllabi have been written, dorm rooms refurbished, classrooms constructed, and in a thousand ways faculty, staff, and administrators have prepared for students to return.
