NCATE: Call for Comments

The Education Program at Union College, Lincoln Nebraska, is hosting an accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) October 24-26, 2010. We invite interested parties to submit third-party comments for review by the visiting team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of any professional education programs offered and should specify the party’s relationship to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).

Union College Library is seeking nominations for the 2010 Teacher of theYear Award.

Easier Off-campus Access to Library Databases

The library is pleased to announce a new login system for off-campus access to library databases.  Students may now login to most databases from off-campus using their UC IDs and passwords (the same one used for Moodle and Self Service).  Faculty members should use their Marcie usernames and passwords.  This eliminates the need to track down database-specific login information for each individual database system.

Gallery exhibit 'Gets to Know Nebraska'

When Nebraska is mentioned in movies and television shows, it’s usually an alias for “nowhere.” Union College students, staff and faculty are changing perceptions by helping others Get to Know Nebraska. The contest entrees depicting Nebraska’s landscape, people and places through art, photography and essays will be displayed in the McClelland Art Gallery through March 13.

The contest is sponsored by Student Services and includes three student categories and one employee category. Select pieces of art may eventually be permanently hung in the student center.

Films on Demand is Here to Stay

Faculty response to the Films on Demand trial has been overwhelmingly positive.  In fact, faculty are so excited, we could not wait until next fall to start an annual subscription to the database.  When the trial subscription ends on March 10, Union College will seamlessly move into a regular annual subscription to Films on

Annual Mr. and Ms. World Pageant to be webcast

Union College’s annual Mr. and Ms. World Pageant will be webcast live from the Union College gym on February 27, starting at 8:15 p.m. CST. The live feed and archived footage from the event will be available at http://www.ucollege.edu/uclive.

Co-sponsored by Associated Student Body (ASB) and the International Club, the pageant features 10 contestants—each from a different country—judged in three categories: national costume, formal wear and talent.

Union College Library Acquires Its First JSTOR Collection

Union College Library has purchased its first JSTOR collection.  The Language and Literature collection includes 78 titles focusing on literature and language in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. The earliest publication is from 1884 and the most recent articles are currently from 2007.

LifeTalk Radio to interview IRR students

The Union College International Rescue and Relief Program will be featured on LifeTalk Radio and the Hope Channel on Tuesday, Feb. 23, during the Steve Gallimore Live Show. The hour-long live call-in show is simulcast from 1 to 2 p.m. CST.

Students Daniel Rogers and Sarah Sexton will join John Thomas, the program's administrative director, on the show to discuss both the IRR program's recent trips to Haiti and the unique coursework and hands-on training that prepares students to respond to emergencies and provide aid to developing nations.

IRR students discuss Haiti with Senator Johanns

Representatives from Union College’s International Rescue and Relief Program met with Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska on February 18 to discuss conditions in Haiti. IRR majors Brittany Nunez, Sarah Sexton and David Skau joined assistant director John Thomas for the meeting, which also included members of Haiti response teams from Creighton University Medical Center and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Senator Johanns called the meeting to learn more about the situation in Haiti as he and other government leaders look for ways to best aid recovery

Mid-America Basketball Tournament single-elimination brackets announced

Mid-America Basketball Tournament officials have announced brackets for the single-elimination tournament which will begin Saturday night. The basketball event, which includes men's and women's teams from ten Adventist academies, began on Wednesday with a round-robin tournament and will conclude Sunday afternoon.

Tournament games played in the Union College gym will be webcast live and archived at uclive.ucollege.edu.

Lincoln Educational Access channel to broadcast academy tournament game

The Lincoln Educational Access Channel (Lincoln Time Warner Cable channel 21) will tape tonight's basketball game between College View Academy and Maplewood Academy at 8:30 p.m. in the Union College gym. The game, part of Union's annual Mid-America basketball tournament, will be streamed live and archived at uclive.ucollege.edu and broadcast at a later date on Time Warner Cable channel 21.

First spring nursing cohort graduates

Eighteen nursing students created history in December simply by graduating. Two years prior, the students had been the first class to take advantage of the newly expanded Nursing program by being admitted during the spring semester rather than the fall. The revised nursing program took flight in 2007, accepting two classes of 24 students each semester—nearly doubling the nursing enrollment.

'Nobodies' show in McClelland Art Gallery

Art isn't about fame or fortune. That's the message of The Nobodies 2010 Art Collective, an exhibition in the McClelland Art Gallery running from Feb. 15-24. Reprising of a show last year by Abner Aguilar and Chris Smith, this year they are joined by Bob Fraser, Ed Mejia, and Scott Cushman. 

Fernando Ortega to perform for Union College

Fernando Ortega, contemporary Christian singer-songwriter, will be performing a free concert at Union College at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 19. A musician since the age of eight, Ortega perfected his unique sounds at the University of New Mexico before releasing his first album in 1994. This will be his third performance at Union College.

World record holder, Todd Huston, speaks for chapel

Todd Huston doesn’t let a little thing like death or an amputated limb get in the way of fulfilling dreams. On Feb. 16, Huston will speak at Union College’s chapel service about his experience overcoming challenges.

Union student wins Nebraska ADDY

For Justin Gibson, an invitation to one banquet led to an award at another.

Gibson’s poster for the spring 2009 Associated Student Body banquet won a student silver ADDY at this year’s Nebraska ADDY Awards. The ADDY awards are presented annually by the American Advertising Federation for creativity in advertising. The competition is a three-tiered process, starting at the state level then winning designs go on to compete at regional and national competitions.

Films on Demand: Database Trial Available until March 10, 2010

Union Drama presents "That's What Makes Them Pirates"

Union College drama students are premiering That's What Makes Them Pirates!, a musical comedy written and composed by Union's own Mike Mennard. Based on Mennard's children's recording, Pirates Do the Darnedest Things, the play unfolds aboard the Jolly Nostril, the pick of the seven seas. The notorious Captain Rapscallion and crew, searching for adventure, revenge, and sword fights, are beset by the infamous Captain Blake, whom Rapscallion believes killed her husband.

Forbes takes McClelland Art Gallery in new Directions

 Bruce Forbes, chair of Union’s Division of Fine Arts, is taking visitors in new Directions with his McClelland Art Gallery display. Running through Feb. 13, his 25 gallery pieces include platinum and palladium prints, toned silver gelatin prints and color digital prints.

Repairs to cause temporary heat and hot water outage tonight

The heat and hot water will be shut off to the dorms and other main campus buildings from 10:00 p.m. tonight (Feb. 2) until 6:30 a.m. tomorrow in order to repair two damaged steam valves in the campus heating system.

The temperature in the dormitories should not drop more than 10 degrees, but please close all windows and window blinds to conserve residual heat.
