Pastor Jonathan Burnett to speak for Week of Prayer
When Union students Tyler Morrison and Ricky Melendez first heard Pastor Jonathan Burnett speak, it was love at first sermon. “We were doing worship for the North Dakota youth conference meeting over the summer when we first heard him speak,” said Morrison. “After hearing him speak and being moved by his message we knew we had to get him to Union.”
Burnett is crossing the Atlantic Ocean to deliver a unique Week of Prayer for Union College. Originally from the United Kingdom, Burnett studied at Andrews Theological Seminary in Michigan. Soon after completing his education he moved back to the UK and is currently a pastor in East Sussex, Brighton. He and his wife, Jodi, began to raise a family soon after and are now parents to two little girls.
Burnett focuses his ministry towards the young adult population. “He has a special gift in being able to deliver God’s word,” said Melendez. “He puts Bible stories in a different perspective that just blows your mind.”
“Campus Ministries is focused in helping our students forming a relationship with God,” said Morrison, the Union for Christ director. “The way Burnett is able to take a story from the Bible and give it a different perspective made me learn a lot more about the character of God and his British accent is really engaging!”
As UFC director, Morrison continues to focus on brining speakers that will help students understand how to develop deep and personal relationships with Christ. “Forming a relationship with Christ is just like forming it with a friend,” said Morrison. “The more you know their hopes and dreams and passions the easier it is to love them, when forming a relationship with Christ.”
During Week of Prayer, prayer will be held three times a day on campus at 10:32 a.m., 12:32 p.m. and at 2:32 p.m. signalled by the clock tower chimes. A prayer group will also be led every morning at 7:32 p.m. in the prayer room located in Prescott Hall. “We will be praying about specific requests every day at every designated time,” said Morrison. “Whether it is family, friends, politics or anything that’s going on we will just take that time to lift it up in prayer.”
“I’m really excited to have him here on campus for a whole week,” said Melendez. “He is super funny and a great guy, when I hear the man talk I know that God is speaking through him.”
Burnett will be speaking in Woods Auditorium April 7-10 at 8:32 p.m., for at the College View Church for chapel at 10:32 on Tuesday, April 8, and at 8:02 p.m. for Family Worship on Friday, April 11. He will also speak for the worship services at 9:15 a.m. and noon on Saturday, April 12. All events are open to the public.
