Union to host statewide writing center conference

On Sept. 24, Union College will host the fourth annual Nebraska Writing Center Consortium meeting featuring guest speaker Dr. Rasha Diab, assistant professor of rhetoric and writing at the University of Texas-Austin.

In addition to delivering the keynote address for the conference, Diab will also give a talk titled “Embracing the Rhetoric of Peace: Insights from Indigenous Practice/Practices” for an Academic Assembly on Thursday, Sept. 23, in Woods Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. Worship credit will be given for attendance.

Congratulations 2010/2011 class officers

Following a rousing rendition of "Slinga de Ink" at convocation on Sept. 21, 2010, classes met to choose new student leaders for this school year. A far cry from the earnest politicking of ASB elections in the spring, class elections are informal affairs. Nominations are made on the spot, and votes are cast by raised hands. As happy as the winners are to be chosen, the unsuccessful candidates often return to their seats with a smile, knowing they have one less thing to worry about.

Dumpster diving? If that's what it takes to serve.

Like many Union College students, Shelina Berglund, a senior from Idaho, will stop at nothing—even dumpster diving—if that’s what it takes to lend a hand. On Thursday, Sept. 9, Berglund will lead Project Impact, a day when more than 800 Union students and employees take a day out of classes and work to serve more than 50 sites throughout the Lincoln community service organizations.

Library Fair September 16, 2010: Get in on the Action

The annual Union College Library fair will be held September 16, 2010 from 3-6 p.m.  This year the fair features a sports theme with a variety of activities for everyone.  Participants will be able to explore sports-related books from the library collection, try their hands at bowling or golfing, and join a Wii competition.

Mentorship program leads to a purrrfect internship

The jump from college student to working professional is difficult at best, but Taylor Olson, senior business administration major from Minnesota, has made the transition smoothly thanks to Union College’s Division of Business and Computer Science mentorship program.

Whether timing the perfect candid, constructing a scene or digitally manipulating elements after the fact, there are a myriad ways photographers interact with their tools and their world to create art. The Young Alumni Art Exhibit on display in the McClelland Art Gallery showcases a wide range of styles, encouraging visitors to consider what makes a photo a work of art.

Union College Education Program Approved by State

Union’s Education Program was approved by the Nebraska Department of Education. All endorsements were approved without conditions except English and Language Arts which required additional assessment data. Since receiving the notification letter, the Education Department’s Teacher Preparation Committee voted to require all departments offering secondary endorsements, including English and Language Arts Education, to have students take an exit exam in their content area to meet the Rule 24 standard

Union again ranked among America's best colleges

U.S. News has once again rated Union College in the top tier for its category in the magazine's highly-anticipated annual rankings. Placing 35th among Midwestern regional colleges, this is the fifth consecutive year Union has earned the title of one of America's best colleges.

While no standardized system can account for unique institutional strengths or the individual needs of students, Union College administrators are proud to see the institution compare favorably with its peers.

Orientation, registration and the start of a new year

Summer is a quiet time at Union College, and each fall students rejuvenate the campus. For the last three months, syllabi have been written, dorm rooms refurbished, classrooms constructed, and in a thousand ways faculty, staff, and administrators have prepared for students to return. Union College Library Joins the Nebraska Memories Project

Union College Library recently became the thirtieth participant to join the Nebraska Memories project of the Nebraska Library Commission.  This collaborative initiative encourages organizations holding historical photographic material related to Nebraska to contribute scanned images to the project.  The original organizations retain ownership of the documents and digital files.  Funded by the State of Nebraska, the Nebraska Memories database s

Visit Union during NICF College Week

Union College invites students from around Nebraska to visit during the Nebraska Independent College Foundation's annual College Week. Nebraska high school students are encouraged to consider the nine member colleges and universities located throughout the state. Visitors will have an opportunity to talk with admissions and financial aid counselors, take a campus tour and (as available) talk with an advisor in their academic field.

ACT: test information for new students

 Your ACT scores are needed to determine:
1. Your acceptance to Union College;
2. The English and math classes for which you may register; and
3. Your merit scholarship award amount.

Act quickly if you still need to take (or retake) the ACT for acceptance to Union, for placement in higher level math and/or English class(es), or for better scholarship award amounts.

Choosing your program: Division of Human Development

The education program at Union College offers diverse classroom experiences, making graduates "classroom ready" and sought after by schools all over North America. Student teaching and observation hours are fulfilled in a variety of setting including Adventist and public classrooms, and in single- and multi-grade settings like the two-room elementary lab school, located on Union's campus.

Choosing your program: Division of Fine Arts

The Division of Fine Arts welcomes Cynthia Stokes as a full-time faculty member in the Music Department. Mrs. Stokes has directed the Union College Concert Winds since January 2008 and has taught instrumental lessons and Woodwind techniques over the past two years. She brings over 30 years of music teaching experience at levels ranging from first grade through college level.

Academic opportunity: Union Scholars

Union Scholars is an honors program where students take interactive interdisciplinary classes that focus on the theme of "Global Issues." The program replaces the 54 semester units of general education requirements with 46 semester units of Union Scholars courses from areas such as religion, humanities, and science plus a volunteer service component. In their senior year, Scholars pursue a specific area of interest through an independent study and research project called an Honors Thesis.
