Frankie Rose Named 2013 Library Teacher of the Year

As part of the National Library Week 2013 celebration, Union College Library has presented its Teacher of the Year Award to Dr. Frankie Rose, Assistant Professor of Biology. Approximately twenty Physician Assistant students and faculty members nominated Rose, each one sharing stories of his passion for teaching and his integration of library resources into classroom activities.

Union offers resources to build better understanding between faiths

This school year, Union College launched the Center for Interfaith Studies and Culture, a center devoted to educating Union College to better serve people of different faiths and to foster goodwill and understanding between the school and other faith groups.

On April 20, Doug Hardt, the center’s director will present an overview of the content and historical context of the Qu’ran at 4 p.m. in the Shawnee-Porter Care Conference Room at Union College.

"Our Promising Future" campaign tops $13 million

Union College’s new science and mathematics complex is nearing reality—both physically and financially. Already the framework for the new 58,000-square-foot building towers over what used to be parking lots between Rees Hall and Larson Lifestyle Center on the north side of the campus, and the complex is well on its way to completion at the end of the calendar year.

Peace Week to culminate with Shane Claiborne talk

“Union College is a center for peacemaking just as Christianity is a center,” said Chris Blake. “We want to be children of God just as Jesus said: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.’”

Easter week events to culminate in Resurrection Pageant

During the week celebrated by the Christian world commemorating the final events in the life of Christ, including his death and resurrection, Union College students will be able to follow the story at a series of events throughout the week highlighted by a Resurrection Pageant, which will unfold on March 30 on the Union College campus, with tours starting every 20 minutes between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Adventist historians to convene at Union

The Association for Seventh-day Adventist Historians (ASDAH) will hold their seventh triennial conference at Union College on March 21-24, 2013. Adventist scholars from around the U.S. and the world will convene to present and discuss the theme, “Adventist Transitions between 1880 and 1920.”

North American youth leaders convene at Union over spring break

Students will soon eagerly depart campus for exotic destinations as spring break approaches, but the Union College campus will be far from empty without them.

From March 7-14, youth directors and youth pastors from across North America will gather at Union College for the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s North American Division (NAD) Youth Ministries Annual Committee Meetings. The meetings see numerous researchers, administrators and pastors convening to discuss issues relating to youth and young adults in the U.S., Canada and Bermuda.

The Vespers to perform Friday, Mar. 1

Americana Christian folk band “The Vespers” will perform for vespers at Union College on Friday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the College View Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The Nashville-born group is uniquely made up of two sets of siblings, the Cryar sisters and Jones brothers, who joined forces three years ago after meeting through a mutual friend. After jamming together several times over a campfire and visiting each other’s local shows, the pairs fell in “musical love” and decided to team up.

Learning to communicate in the digital world

Harrison Smith likes computers. In fact, that’s what he decided to study when he arrived at Union College a couple of years ago. But through his job at a popular music blog he discovered that instead of learning the language of machines, he’d rather use them as tool to connect with people.

Union College drama presents "Our Town"

In Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, intelligent idealist Emily Webb always speaks her mind and doggedly pursues her goals. Union College freshman Natalie Bruzon, who takes on the role of Emily Webb in Union’s upcoming performance of the play, discovered a lot of herself in the character.

Midland men and College View women win 2013 tournament

The Midland Mustangs from Kansas City, Kans., won the 2013 Mid-America men's basketball tournament by edging out the Maplewood Huskies from Hutchinson, Minn., in the championship game by a score of 44-34.

In the women's bracket, the College View Academy Eagles from Lincoln, Neb., defeated the Sunnydale Spartans from Centralia, Mo., 32-27 to take the title.

Film festival focuses on world of the blind

In October, Union College students received a media challenge: produce a short video for use on the Web and social media that answers the question “Do we understand the world of the blind?” Six film makers rose to the challenge and on January 17, three were awarded cash prizes at the first In:Sight Video Awards event—hosted by Christian Record Services for the Blind and Union College.

Finding the right school at the right time.

“In October 2009, my nursing advisor at Southeast Community College said they would put my name on the list, and I could probably start taking nursing classes in 2012,” recalled Damion Caudy. “I left my advisor’s office that day and thought, what am I going to do? I have a daughter at home to support. I have to go to school! Ten or fifteen seconds later, I heard an ad for the Union College nursing program on the radio.”

Students teach healthy living in Nicaragua

For pre-med students like senior Courtney Laubach, the Union College International Rescue and Relief (IRR) program’s semester in Nicaragua provides hands-on experience that gives them a unique advantage in medical school.  “I’m really excited to go to Nicaragua,” said Laubach. “It will be good to provide medical care and make a difference in someone’s health through education. You can treat the symptoms, but only education can really help in the long term.”

Records Office offers online transcript ordering

One click is now all it takes for Unionites to order official Union College transcripts. Starting Nov. 27, the Union College Records Office will use the National Student Clearinghouse to provide online access to ordering any time.
