Conducting research, particularly on living subjects, often raises questions of ethics and morality. Institutional review boards help researchers navigate issues regarding the welfare of subjects, promote humane practices and avoid exploitation.
All faculty, staff and students planning research in which live subjects will be studied must first apply to the appropriate institutional review board before beginning their research. Union College has two such boards, the Human Subjects Review Board and the Animal Research Board.
