It's April 16; Good Morning Union
“Return to Me and I will return to you.” Malachi 3:7
100 years after Zechariah, Malachi penned the last book of the Old Testament. The lessons of obedience and trust in God that Zech stressed had long since been forgotten and God has an apathetic people who are stuck in spiritual mediocrity, not understanding anything He was trying to tell them-- AGAIN. At least 8 times that I found this morning God suggests something in their lives that need adjusting and they answer with a question of confusion. It was like they didn’t get anything He was talking about. It confirmed in my mind the danger of being distracted from God’s ways at best, or rejecting God’s ways at worst—it ONLY brings confusion in my view and understanding of God.
But through it all God says, “I the Lord do not change.” And He outlines AGAIN clearly what He wants from His children, and assures them that IF they will come back, they’ll be able to get back together. But the sad part is that this is the end of the Old Testament and there is a 400 year period of silence before the New Testament begins; and it begins with God’s chosen people STILL not getting it. How sad for the Jewish nation; how blessed to be His child today and know that He is JUST as interested in connecting and reconnecting with me.
Malachi ends with the reminder that this whole thing called life is really an open illustration of the difference between those who follow God and those who don’t; those who serve Him and those who don’t. His offer still stands; He waits to bless those who love and serve Him, but I need to decide to do that so He can do what He says He really wants to do, for me and for you.
Have a great day deciding for God,
Quote for the day: “I would like to call the church and Christians to move from dabbling to devotion, from transience to permanence, from preference to proximity, from beliefs to practices.” Youth pastor Jon Tyson in an interview with David Kinnaman
