It's April 23; Good Morning Union
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:8
Weakness is NOT the most idolized personality quality desired by humanity. But for some reason, Paul flashed it in neon colors this morning (literally—the verses I’m talking about are highlighted in my Bible in neon green!)
“If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.” 11:30
“My power is made perfect in weakness.” 12:8
“When I am weak, then I am strong.” 12:10
So what’s the big deal with “weakness?” Maybe it has to do with God’s continual desire to make me more like Him but there are just SO many things that distract me from that goal that He understands my primary need to be God-dependence, not self-sufficient, most clearly demonstrated in whatever part of my life I see as strong.
Even Jesus, while on this earth, had to go through times that maybe He didn’t need to teach HIM to depend on His Father, He already did pretty good at that, but to illustrate to me the importance of and the process of not focusing on MY strength but on His.
The temptation is often just too great to focus on me rather than on Him. God says one of the best ways to overcome that roadblock to blessings is to turn the focus away from myself and onto Him. I’m going to talk about what I can’t do more than what I can do so that I don’t lose track of where my real power comes from. And when I do I actually then have an unending source of strength rather than accept the limitations of even my strength. Maybe that’s even why God allowed Paul to have a “thorn in his flesh,” so he was reminded of his weakness. I’m pretty much a wimp when it comes to asking God to give me whatever “thorn” I might need in my flesh to keep me from becoming proud of my strengths. And so far He’s been pretty gentle with the thorns as I keep trying to focus on His strength.
Have a great day being “weak” so you can be really strong,
Quote for the day: "It always seems to us that we are loved because we are good. But we don't suspect that we are loved because those who love us are good." -Leo Tolstoy (Personal Diaries 1897)
PS PEACE WEEK AT UNION COLLEGE- Today is Forgiveness Day!
Inside the Ortner Center will be an activity table at which students can sign a note
1. Seeking forgiveness
2. Offering forgiveness, or,
3. Seeking forgiveness explicitly from Jesus
The activity takes only about a minute per person and is an excellent opportunity to address a burden in one's life. There will also be complimentary candies! Please drop by and make a difference--spread peace.
– Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. -Colossians 3:15, 16 (NIV)
– Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. -2 Thessalonians 3:16 (NIV)
