It's December 2; Good Morning Union

“I urge you, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—THIS is your spiritual act of worship.”                Romans 12:1

I have been “reviewing” a really powerful chapter of scripture lately (“refixing” it in my mind!) and I was again “reimpressed” with the power and practical wisdom found in it for living God’s way. So I think I’ll spend a few days taking it apart and “reminding” myself of its potential!

“Reciting” a complex sentence backwards sometimes helps me gain a fuller understanding of its real simplicity! So for today- how do I really worship God “in spirit and in truth?” By offering my body as my living sacrifice—my living offering if you please. And I do this BECAUSE OF His mercy. There’s my verse for today-- backwards!

Worship is not something I get “points” for; it’s not even something I go to see what it will do for me; it’s something I do—and give! Even before the reminder in this chapter I have been more and more inspired by coming into God’s house (or anywhere else for that matter, but God’s house is a very natural and convenient place for it to happen!) with the express intent of giving to God, not just my offerings, but everything—I sing TO Him not about Him, I pray to Him more with my thankfulness than my requests, I focus on Him and not on me—I give TO, rather than expect to get FROM, Him. And the first verse I look at today says that I also give myself to Him. My whole person is my offering!

And true to my belief- If it’s important to God it’s clear in His word- I do this by “not conforming any longer to the pattern of this world,” but I am “transformed by the renewing of my mind.” It’s a conscious choice (or a series of a million conscious choices!) that keep me away from anything that DIStracts FROM God and focuses all my energy on whatever it is that ATtracts me TO God!

And the promise of making this bodily “offering” to God-- “THEN you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” If I want to know God’s will then I start by “offering my body as a living sacrifice” to Him. Then I make careful choices that keep me from “conforming to the pattern of this world.”

It’s a mind thing, not just an emotional thing. It’s not just going with the flow- que sera sera- whatever- type of living. It’s deciding with my head what it is that will bring me Godly happiness and then following through with my conclusions. And my conclusion is that it starts by choosing to live my life for Him and Him alone!

Have a great day making your living offering to Him,

Pastor Rich
