It's February 25; Good Morning Union
“The knowledge of truth leads to godliness.” Titus 1: 2
A little algebra review for today:
If A + B = C
And A + B = D
Then C = D, right?
So let’s see if it works in theology as well! I started reading my book-that-corresponds-to-the-day, that book being the short letter from Paul to Titus, and I found some spiritual algebra!
“Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised.” So here it is:
Faith + Knowledge = Godliness
Faith + Knowledge also = resting in the hope of eternal life
Therefore Godliness = resting in the hope of eternal life!
It delivers me from the temptation of believing that Godliness = legalistically obeying to the point of perfection. I have been solidifying the book of 1 John in my mind as I go out for my morning walks and every time I come to one verse I stop and reflect positively on it. “But we know that WHEN HE APPEARS we shall be like Him” (so, though I will continue to be as much like Him as I can each day, I will NOT be like Him perfectly UNTIL He appears!) And what is it that will make me “like Him?” “for we shall see Him as He is.” When I see Him, THEN I’ll be like Him. And, “everyone who has this HOPE in Him purifies himself, just as HE is pure.” My “purity” does not come because I have overcome perfectly and have reached some state of complete obedience- I am purified by my HOPE in Him! And “My HOPE is built on nothing less than JESUS’ blood and HIS righteousness!” So here’s another algebraic theological at-this-point conclusion:
Being like Him = Seeing Him as He is
Seeing Him as He is = being purified
So, being purified = being like Him= Seeing Him as He really is!
See, your parents and teachers were right- Algebra WOULD help you some day! I’ll bet you didn’t think it would be to help you keep your theology straight!
Have a great day deductively reasoning your way into a correct connection with Jesus,
Quote for the day: “If at first you don’t succeed try doing it the way mom told you do to it in the first place!”
PS Chapel this week will be presented by Gina Creek, graduate of Union and currently works for Adventist Health System as a Leadership Development Coach.
