“Now, to Him who is able…”        Jude 24

One of my “most favorite” text in all the Bible is 2 Timothy 1:12, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that HE IS ABLE to keep that which I commit to Him…” One time I got stuck on the “HE IS ABLE” part and started looking in the rest of the Bible to discover what it says God is actually “able” to do. It’s quite an eye opening experience! Today’s text is one of the shining lights of His “ability.”

“We know…”     1 John 5:18

John’s epistle is coming to the end. What’s the last thing he wants to leave with me? “Three things,” John concludes, “that we KNOW for sure…”

1.       Anyone born of God does not continue to sin

2.       We are God’s children and the whole world is in the power of the evil one

“And this IS the testimony…”      1 John 5:11

“If it’s important to God, it’s clear in His word.” He can’t make it much clearer than this; it must be really important! John has been talking about the difference between the true and the not so true testimonies about God that have been floating around and he attempts to set the record straight once and for all—“And THIS is the testimony—

1.       God GAVE us eternal life

“Don’t love the world or anything in the world.”                1 John 2:15

That’s a big command! But, true to my approach to God’s word—If it’s important to God, it’s clear in His word, John does not leave me hanging on what he means by this huge expectation. He defined “the world” in three categories:

1.       The lust of the flesh

2.       The lust of the eyes

“I am writing to you children… fathers… young men…”   1 John 2:12

Different strokes for different folks—or “the mission and message don’t change, but the methods must.” This piece of John’s first epistle reminds me that even John knew that axiom to effective communication 1900+ years ago! He writes to three different groups of people with three different reasons for why he is writing, then he repeats himself to the same three groups but with another set of different reasons! Here, let me show you:
